It's taking a little bit of time, but slowly, surely, over the course of 5 months I am settling into life as an attorney - a young one, yeah, and a fairly irresponsible one (personally speaking - professionally, I'm a dude). And it's a weird adjustment process made all the stranger when I realize it's been almost a year since I graduated, since I left New Orleans and came back home.

But oh well. The more time passes, the more I understand that time passes quickly. Ain't enough time to stress about most things. What I've got are my family, my friends, my work, and myself, and that's really kinda enough.

It's an adventure, whether it's in the office, at a jury trial in the sticks, or just generally enjoying wherever I am (New York, my darlin' New Orleans, or Houston, Texas itself), that adventure is what I've got. It's a fine kind of life, but it's short and precious. I'll admit, maybe a lot of it is looking forward just as a way of stopping myself from looking behind, afraid that what I'll see back there is too comfortable, a change I regret in some way or another. But maybe part of that too comes from how finite the time is that we have. I'll only get so many moments with you, with my family, with my best friends, with my co-workers, even with total strangers. It's frankly inefficient to spend the priceless time I have wrapped up in some long-ago.

That's going to be it for the night. Cheers, gang, see y'all back here in another 3-4 months (my track record is abysmal, but given how godammn scattershot these things are, it is possible that this is a good thing).

One piece of advice I received from a colleague I met last week (apart from "Stay down on the ball and occasionally you'll even make contact") was, "Live the dream." And then a few days later, I heard this song, which - in its way - reinforced Rob's advice. Or it didn't, but I really wanted to plug Jens Lenkman. Anyway: I'm not going to lie: it's a weird spot to be in, where I'm at right now.

In struggling to put it into perspective, I was talking with my friend Fran, who referred me to this concept Dr. Michael Kimmel wrote about called "Guyland." The idea is that there's a grey area between adolescence and adulthood that men go through. In that little twilight zone, the Guy plays video games and spends too much money on booze consumer electronics and cars and other fairly pointless shit, and the Guy chases after women without pursuing long-term, commited relationships, and there's a lot of boorish and immature behavior surrounding all of that.

Dr. Kimmel toured on the subject, gamely tackling the question of "why won't men grow up?" He talked about how dangerous and socially reprehensible all the behavior was, hypothesized that a lot of it was out of fear of the success of the Guy's female counterparts - typical stuff, really, and accompanied by the typical handwringing. And now that I'm actually (somewhat) independent, out of school, and earning a kind of income (oh sweet, sweet income), all I can think, in response to all this, is: eat shit, Dr. Kimmel.

Not on a personal level or anything, of course (I really only take issue with the conclusions arrived at), but come on. Young men don't want commitment? Young men want to dispose of their income and property as they see fit, buying relatively ephemeral things along the way? And this is problematic? Give me a fucking break.

In his theorizing, Dr. Kimmel hints that we men stand back looking with some kind of pissed-off awe at our female colleagues, resentful that they're reaping the fruits of modern feminism, but (I reiterate) come the fuck on. What are we looking at that we don't already have? Accepting all attendant risks of sounding chauvinistic, it's actually pretty goddamn great to be us.

Thing is, I'm young. I'm intelligent. I work hard. And hell yes, I'm going to enjoy myself, and no, I'm not always going to do it like a Reasoned and Intelligent Grown-Up Man. Maybe it's arrested development and maybe it's indicative of some developmental flaw on my end, but yes - I'm going to do stupid things. I'm going to spend money foolishly. I'm going to be callous and insensitive and explain it with a shrug, saying "boys will be boys."

And the hell with anyone who's not behind that, because I have worked my ass off to get where I am right now. These are my opportunities; it's my life; and yes, indeed: I'm going to live the dream. And I'm really, really going to enjoy it. Sure, I'm mellowing out, but I will do so at my own pace and in my own time. As I recall, genuine self-reflection/-discovery are pretty important steps of all this, too. My thing is, I have only so many moments on this earth. How I spend them, with whom, all that - it's my prerogative. I'll do my best, but it's up to me what I do with them. The only constant is that I'm going to appreciate all of them and live in them to the greatest extent possible. Don't condescend to me and tell me that what I'm doing is some kind of refusal to grow up.

Anyway, that all seems significantly angrier than I think either of us would have expected. Apologies for that ("boys will be boys!") all around. Truth is, I'm not anywhere close to as indignant as everything above no doubt would suggest I am. I just get riled up sometimes, get on my soapbox. You know me. C'est la vie.

p.s. you probably wish I'd stick to posting stupid youtube videos. Reading back over this, I guess I do as well. Oh well. Tomorrow look for adorable dog photos and youtube videos again.

I'll tell anyone who asks that I'm really goddamn excited about getting to spring break because it represents, in all truth, the first real break that I've had since January. Wedding weekend aside, the past months have been a pretty brutal stretch for a lot of reasons and on a lot of fronts. The break? She is necessary. Necessary doesn't even touch it. I could get profane here, but I'll try not to.

And there's a lot of good coming up soon, too. In addition to a new Moot Court Chief Justice (good luck, successor), a finished set of intraschool competitions, a finished ABA trial competition, and sundry other things, I might even have a life again. Shit, I might even study again. It's fantastic. It's hard to even imagine at this point.

But harder still is the fact that after spring break, there are only 3 more weeks of school left. I know it's probably pretty obvious to go full-on "WOOOO FUCKIN SPRING BREAK THEN NO MORE SCHOOL WOOOOOO," and that's fair. No one likes law school. No one. Nobody. And we all root, silently or aloud, for it to end.

Thing is, though, I'm not near ready for the end. Not even close. And I don't know how any of us are right now.

Never mind the economic uncertainty out there (and yes, I'm one of the lucky ones who will begin 2011 employed. I count my blessing daily). I've always been an experiential person, a plugged-into-other-people person. Since I was 17, and probably since I was younger, my friends have been the most important part of my life (see, thing is, I lump "friends" into the broader "family" column, so there are no misstatements here - I am fiercely devoted and fiercely loyal to both). And here at Tulane, in New Orleans, I've developed some of the greatest friendships I have ever had. These folks and I have weathered a goddamn storm, several really, and we're almost smiling, singing, and dancing on the other side. But when the song ends, though, we scatter. And fast.

Two days after graduation, I'm expected back in Houston to start bar prep. Two days. 48 hours. That means I move the day after I walk. It means I have to say good-bye to a city that really has gotten its hooks into me and the hundreds of people who've made life as I know it for the past three years not only possible, but an absolute fucking pleasure, less than a day after school is done.

Maybe I'm getting worked up over this prematurely (sidenote: I am certainly getting worked over this prematurely. But I overthink things. Everything. All things. This was bound to happen), but at the two-month out point, I think I'm about to understate things a lot when I say "I'm a little nervous."

...I'm a little nervous.

I hope this e-mail finds y'all well - it finds me a little nervous, because on Friday, March 5, at the Pediatric Cancer Wing of the Tulane Hospital right here in New Orleans, I - along with Angad Ghai, Marcus Edwards, and some of the other fine students of Tulane Law School - am going to shave my head for pediatric cancer research.

My friend and future co-worker, Tesha Robaszkiewicz, organized Houston's first St. Baldrick's event last summer. I didn't participate then, but it's my pleasure to do so now. Also, because I'm unoriginal, the vast majority of this e-mail is cribbed from Tesha. Please don't judge.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is dedicated to fighting childhood cancer. A lot of us have been affected by cancer - but more, worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. While advances have saved many children, childhood cancer still claims the lives of more children in the US than any other disease - more than diabetes, asthma, congenital anomalies, cystic fibrosis and AIDS - combined!

Support me in shaving my head! Funds raised by the St. Baldrick's Foundation will be used to fund childhood cancer research - to help speed the day when every child with cancer will be guaranteed a healthy future.

The mission of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is to raise awareness and funds to cure kids’ cancer by supporting cancer research and fellowships. If I could somehow channel the time I waste when the insomnia hits into something productive, I'd be pretty much amazing. But instead, I watch "Being John Malkovich" and listen to sad jazz. It's pretty substantially less than amazing.

In a sense, though, tonight's reaction is probably better than last night's ("Synecdoche, New York" and scotch), the night before (text messaging and "Inglourious Basterds"), and Sunday's (making five or six extraordinarily misguided Valentine's Day cards - which those of you who read this whom I see regularly will receive closer to day-of). I guess, given my lack of objectivity, that I'm ill-equipped to judge me here. But I'm not so stupid as to misidentify those situations where I need some help. So - help!

I swear though, God as my witness, to all two (four? it's an even number and it's got to be single-digit) readers, I will increase the posting, talk about the more interesting stuff that happens around me, and just generally be a good blog-neighbor. What would Mr. Rogers do, etc.

So as the adventures happen (and sometimes they do, they really do), you kind people will be the first to read about them. And if that doesn't sound exciting, well...you're wrong, because Reading is (totally) FUNdamental.
